Skill Development
Cooking, budgeting, public transport, technology. Learn at your own pace with someone patient enough to let you figure it out, and skilled enough to help when you need it.
What This Looks Like
Skill development is about building real independence, not running through a checklist. The skills that matter most are the ones that make your daily life easier and give you more control over how you live.
Your support worker teaches by doing, not by lecturing. You cook together, shop together, navigate apps together. Repetition, patience, and real-world practice. Not worksheets.
Everyone learns differently. Some people pick things up quickly. Some need to do it twenty times before it sticks. Both are fine. Your worker adjusts to you.
What We Teach
Real skills, practised in real life, at your pace.
-
Cooking & Nutrition
Learning to plan meals, shop for ingredients, cook safely, and eat well. From basics like toast and eggs to full meals you are proud of.
In Practice"You layered that lasagna without looking at the recipe once. Toast, then eggs, then pasta, and now a full lasagna with the oven timed perfectly. Every dish built on the one before it."
-
Technology & Devices
Using your phone, tablet, laptop, and the apps that make life easier. Email, banking, maps, shopping, streaming, and staying connected.
In Practice"Google Maps open, departure time checked, stop identified. You had the whole route figured out before I even got here. The app is becoming second nature."
-
Hygiene & Self-Care Routines
Building consistent personal care routines that work for you. Morning routines, skincare, dental care, and general wellbeing habits.
In Practice"Shower, teeth, deodorant, dressed, breakfast. Straight through the morning chart without a pause. You barely glanced at it today. The routine is starting to feel automatic."
-
Money & Budgeting
Understanding your money, tracking spending, paying bills, saving for things you want, and not running out before payday.
In Practice"$47 left in the spending money and it's only Wednesday. And those headphones you saved for are sitting on your desk. The budget is doing its job."
-
Personal Admin
Managing appointments, filling in forms, understanding letters from Centrelink or your health providers, and keeping important documents organised.
In Practice"Letter from Centrelink. Opened it, read it, filed it in the right folder, and told me what it says. The system is working. Everything in its place."
-
Social & Communication Skills
Practising conversations, understanding social cues, managing conflict, and building the confidence to express yourself clearly.
In Practice"Walked up to the counter, eye contact, said the order clearly, and a thank you. Smooth as anything. The barista smiled back. I'm just here drinking coffee next to you."

Cost, Eligibility & Getting Started
The practical details on funding and how to get a worker matched to you.
What It Costs
Skill development is funded through Core Supports in your NDIS plan. Pricing follows the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits, and the amount depends on the type of support and whether it happens on a weekday, evening, or weekend.
If you do not have NDIS funding, skill development is available fee-for-service. Cost is always confirmed in writing before support starts.
Am I Eligible?
Skill development sits under Core Supports, specifically Assistance with Social & Community Participation. If your plan includes this category, you can use it for this support.
A support coordinator can help you check. It is also available fee-for-service without a plan.
Where We Work
Get Unlocked is based in Thomastown and works across Greater Melbourne, including the northern, western, and eastern suburbs, plus parts of regional Victoria.
Sessions happen wherever the skill needs to be practised, at home, out shopping, or on public transport.
How To Start
Get in touch, have a quick chat about your goals and your plan, then get matched with a worker who can teach at your pace.
